The Subway Map is free! Just ask for it at any station. Subways run 24 hours a day - but after midnight you might wait 20 mins. for a train. It is wiser to buy a metrocard than single rides (one ride is $2). A daily metrocard is just $7.00 for unlimited rides (including the buses). A weekly is $24.00 and a monthly is $76.00.
Within the city, taxis cruise the streets looking for passengers. Taxi stands are at many hotels and transportation terminals. Yellow medallion taxis are the ONLY vehicles authorized to pick up street hails. One fare covers all passengers. Cabs need not be shared. Fare begins at $2.50, then jumps 30 cents for each additional fifth of a mile (or 20 min of waiting time). Nightly 50 cent surcharge (8 PM till 6 AM).
